William (Bill) Mobley:
Tech Firms Outcompete TV Manufacturers in TV OS Wars. The largest connected TV platforms are Roku, Samsung’s Tizen, and Amazon’s Fire TV.
These large tech firms each have a big edge over operating systems from TV manufacturers, such as LG’s WebOS and Vizio’s SmartCast. Those are the only manufacturer platforms that even registered in the study by Parks Associates, with Google TV, Apple TV, PlayStation, and Xbox also holding small market shares.
Samsung is the only manufacturer whose strong TV sales seem to be translating into CTV platform market share, although they’re a giant technology firm with a long history in Android devices and PCs. Amazon, Roku, and Google each license their platforms to other hardware makers, which are available on stand-alone set top hardware in addition to smart TVs.
While a TV OS that fits within a larger tech ecosystem can enhance a user’s experience, it doesn’t seem to be a big driver of TV sales, as most consumers seem to find any smart TV platform good enough, as they all support the major SVOD apps and some form of FAST channel service.
What consumers have been denied is a unified platform. In addition to searching for content, viewers may also be confused about where to find the content they want to watch. For example, 40% of U.S. households are confused about where to find content even if they know what they want to watch.
Proposed Solution: A Non-Competitive, Agnostic "OmniChannel Streaming Platform" — a unified, à la carte service for TV entertainment, accessible across all devices without the need for multiple apps. Imagine a "Spotify for TV" that consolidates everything in one place, removing the complexity for consumers, just as Spotify did for music. The wait may not be that much longer!
